Weekly Scripture

Psalms 15:4

LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?
... He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.

Booker T. Washington tells the true story of a slave from Virginia. This man had made a contract with his master stating that he could purchase his freedom. He was to pay his master a certain sum every year until the agreed amount was paid off. In the mean time, he could work for any man, anywhere he chose. Hearing of better wages in Ohio, the slave journeyed there to find work.

During this time, the Emancipation Proclamation was issued and freedom was finally granted to all slaves.  At this time, the slave still owed three hundred dollars to his previous master, but the government issued law had legally freed him and nullified the debt. Therefore, he had absolutely no obligation to pay his previos owner. Despite this fact, the man felt compelled to honor his agreement and stand by his word.  Thus, with no trasportation, he walked the greater portion of the distance from Ohio to Virginia to locate his old master. Once found, he placed every last dollar into his hands—even paying him interest.

The ex-slave told Washington that he knew he did not have to pay his previous master. However, he had given his word and he said, “I have never broken my word.” His final comment to Mr. Washington was this: “I felt I could not really enjoy my freedom any other way. I had to fulfill the obligation of my promise.”

People with this kind of commitment can truly be trusted. Are we that kind of person? Can we be relied upon to keep our word whether it suits us or not? Will we live up to our vow, even if it means that we might suffer some kind of loss? Or, will we change our minds when it is not to our liking?

Standing true to our word is the very heart and mind of the God who has called us. He changes not! When He says that He will do something, it is as good as done. King David makes note of this godly characteristic and reminds us of this important truth. It is those who keep their word, regardless of cost to them, who will one day dwell in God’s Tabernacle.
